Nutrition
Good nutrition is an integral part of having a happy and healthy companion. Your birds diet should consist of a quality pelleted diet, fresh and cooked vegetables, grains, fruits, nuts and some seed. There are some species who should have limited pellets that have a specialized diet like Eclectus, softbilled birds and others. Check with your veterinarian to be sure you are feeding the correct diet for your species.
The information on this page is based on our research, veterinary recommendations and personal opinions. We feel it's a balanced diet full of variety and nutrition.
A base diet of pellets is given daily. To add a little variety, we add a splash of a seed mix. The favorites seem to be the Bountiful Harvest blends from My Safe Bird Store. We also use the Higgins Fruit to Nut blend and the Higgins Sunburst blends. By adding these various blends, it changes things up a bit and gives the birds something to look forward to at feeding time besides the same old pellets. Think about it....would you rush to eat if you had to eat only Cheerios every day of your life?
Don't be afraid to change things up with your fresh and cooked foods as well. Birds love a healthy variety. It is also easier to introduce new foods or hide some medications in foods when they are accustomed to having new foods introduced regularly. The pictures show a sampling of the types of meals we prepare for the birds.
